Captain's Ball Anyone?
East Spring brings out these 3 sports for you! Yesterday, 3rd August, East Spring Secondary held a Preliminary Inter-Class Competition on the account of the upcoming National Day on 9th August. It was a heated competition between the Upper secondary students for all 3 sports.
Yes, indeed, the students put aside time for the rounds yesterday in order to participate in the games. Definitely, the students were proactive and definitely there were many fierce competitions going on. Many classes showcased their class spirit be it cheering and encouraging.
The students demonstrated the YOG values during the games too, Excellence, Friendship and Respect. The students played with their ultimate might, displayed their friendship after their matches and also respected their opponents. It was a heart whelming sight to many of us. After their match, classmates from different games sprinted toward the different venues in order to give moral support to their classmates. Isn’t it encouraging?
Despite teams lost, they were not discouraged. They admitted defeat and wished their opponents good luck for their Semi Finals. Of course, the victory teams were not arrogant and were grateful for the intense match that both teams put up with. The umpires were respected and were just in the matches. After every match, the spectators cheered and gave shouts of encouragements.
"The match was super intense! I was shocked by how strong the other teams were! But I was thankful for the match that was put up with 3E2. Due to class spirit, we won with a score of 9-1. I'm so anxious for the upcoming Semi Finals on Friday! Go 3E5!"

On 9th August, as East Spring is commemorating National Day, the Semi Finals and the Finals will be held. We are indeed looking forward for the intense match by the classes. Hereby, we wish all the classes Good Luck for their matches on Friday!

Library Exhibition on Racial Harmony Day.
During the June Holidays, the Sec1s to 3s were tasked to complete a project based on the followings:
Sec1- Traditional Costume
Sec2- Cultural food
Sec3- Performing arts
For the sec1s, they were required to do a PowerPoint on the different races in Singapore. They were also required to reuse old and unwanted clothing to modify it into a multi racial costume. Their art pieces were showcased in the library during the racial harmony week.
"I think that it was meaningful as we learnt the different customs and tradition of other races. I felt it was fun as we get together in groups to work together and also help to build up our team spirit. Not only that, we can help to save the environment by reusing our old clothing!"

As for the Sec2s, their tasks were to research on the different cultural food and collate it into a PowerPoint inclusive of a Video that introduces the cultural food. Files by the students were also required and it has to include all the researches done, processes of project and reflections of the entire project. The library also showcased their final works.
"I learnt about the different food from different cultures and understood their origins and how it came about. As it was our first time filming and editing a video, we had faced many difficulties but in the end, we managed to overcome all odds and made our project a successful one!"

Finally, the Sec3s were given a project to research on the performing arts. They were tasked to collate all the research into a file accompanied by a PowerPoint on the different opera groups from different countries. For the last part of their project, they were broken up into groups of 5 to modify an opera to act it out for a video. Their Files were displayed in the Library.
"The project was rather a difficult one this time. It was hard, researching about the different opera groups and to come up with a PowerPoint, it was equally hard. But nonetheless, we still managed to complete and with that, learnt about the different opera groups. It was still a meaningful project!"

The exhibition was a success! Many students actually went to visit this small exhibition during their free time. This exhibition reflects the efforts put in by our students. The selected pieces from the different levels were showcased and their works were one of the best, with an innovative and creative design. It was interesting looking through such wonderful pieces of work. (;

EAST SPRING CELEBRATES RACIAL HARMONY!
On the 21st July 2010, Our school had commemorated Racial Harmony. The students were asked to dress up in their traditional costumes or even other races traditional costumes. Many students were seen in their unique costumes like Cheongsam, Baju Kurong and some even Kimono. The school was filled with many colours and it really brings out the feeling of Racial Harmony. Besides the dress codes, Carnivals are set up by the Secondary 1 and 3 students. Each class is required to set up a stall by either selling food or setting up games.
It was a tremendous success as it really brought classes together to set up their stalls. Song dedications and dance performances were put up by students in the atrium. Indeed, it was all a success! The students managed to bond with their classes and also brought out the feeling of true Racial Harmony.
The journalism club managed to obtain an interview from Keith from 2E4 to share with us his views of racial harmony. "I think that Racial Harmony is a time where all races in Singapore, be it Chinese, Malay or Indians, to come together to be a whole desired nation, working together hand in hand to help Singapore to become a better place for living. It is a time where we converse with one another, understanding each other and even get to bond with one another." He exclaimed. He also shared how important Racial harmony is to Singapore. "It is important as it gets Singaporean to stand together as one united nation, regardless of race, language or religion, fighting to uphold the name of Singapore. It is also a time where we care for one another, laugh and cry with one another and also a time where we create memories with one another that will be etched to our minds forever as we leave the school."
As Keith was one of the participants in the Carnival, he also expresses his thoughts about it to us. "The Carnival was awesome as I could witness so many races working so hard together to make their booth a success. I can feel the unity of the different classes and how they worked their hearts out for this. The song dedications were mostly dedications from different races. I also saw how the different races coming together as one to bring us many wonderful and eye opening performances. It was really proved to be a success! I really learned the importance of Racial Harmony and how important it is for everyone of us. With the works that I saw, I was really moved by the unity and really hope to see this to continue."
All in all, we can conclude that Racial Harmony is important to everyone of us. We hoped that through this once in a year event, the students will understand the importance of it and also learned many ways to express their friendship through the lessons learned in R2ISE lessons. In conclusion, we appreciate the efforts put in by our schoolmates and hope to see a better united EAST SPRING. And together, we can uphold the unity of the schools, and one day, be proud to announced that "WE ARE FROM EAST SPRING SECONDARY SCHOOL."
